Wood Brûlée
Flimsy Works delivered the fabrication and install of fifty display columns for the Design Researchers in Residence: Artificial exhibition at the Design Museum.
At Leaside Yard, we de-nailed, charred, oiled and spliced short and uneven timber pieces to make fifty new useful lengths. By making time and taking care, we prolonged the lives of this otherwise discarded stock of material, which were salvaged from the film industry by ReCollective.
By carbonising the outer layers of the wood, the surface becomes more water-resistant and fire-resistant, as well as protecting the wood against insects and mold. We loved how it looked too.
As part of the build, Flimsy Works hosted a brûlée party, inviting friends and collaborators to join us in celebrating the next phase in these timbers’ lives.
Flimsy Works then installed the columns at the Design Museum, where they were used as a simple repeating scaffold to display information. This exhibition was open to the public between 17 June – 21 September 2025.
